An international
Panel
of Visitors from the

Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has now completed an Overall Review of our education cystem. The Panol conducted two very successful public plenary sessions in Kong Kong earlier this year in which they pointed to major areas of concern. These included tho need to simplify our complex educational system and to improve our ability to formulate policy and plan new developmonts, The Panel's recommandatione will be carefully considered by the Government.

Much has been achiovad ovor the last decade, providing more primary and secondary education, and in
and in raising the standard Of teaching in Our schoole. The Government recognises the central importance of teachers in the education system and the need further to improve the quality of teaching. A start has been made by improvements in staffing ratios, to permit more remedial teaching and the encouragement of a wider range of extra-curricular activitios; and the curriculum has buen broadened through the
the addition of now subjcots and a greater emphasis on practical and technical subjects, to beet the needs of a wider range of pupila. In addition, Educational Television is being extended, class libraries introduced in primary schools and libraries in secondary schools improved. Teaching. centres have been established for languages, mathematics, science and and systematic re-training of schools has begun.
