Grateful for Hong Kong's support, in particular

swift and helpful action in imposing sanctions.

Grateful also for Hong Kong's very generous donation

to South Atlantic Fund. This will of course be used to

help families of Hong Kong seamen as well as those of UK

personnel. A generous gesture.

[If comparisons are drawn between Hong Kong's situation

and that of the Falklands] No real comparison between the

two situations. Relations with China excellent. No threat

of invasion.

Both Chinese and British Governments have

stressed importance of preserving the prosperity and stability

of Hong Kong.
