About 500 Hong Kong seamen of Royal Fleet Auxiliary
(RFA) in Falklands Task Force, plus cooks and laundrymen.
8 Hong Kong Chinese killed during operations, including 2
laundrymen. Some criticism of amount of compensation paid
to families of dead seamen although this was the same as for
UK seamen. Also some criticism of fact that Hong Kong RFA
seamen have different form of contract from UK personnel.
Hong Kong Government, at instigation of UMELCO,
made donation of £2 million to South Atlantic Fund.
criticism in Hong Kong of this on grounds that money would
have been better used to provide, for example, increased
benefits for ex-prisoners of war in Hong Kong.
