Proposed BBC Far East Relay Station

Proposal to establish BBC relay station in Hong Kong

under discussion for some years. Main purpose to improve

reception of broadcasts in northern China and Far East in

general, now relayed from Singapore. Finance for construction

available from 1985-88 but BBC and House of Commons Foreign

Affairs Committee wish this to be earlier.

Hong Kong Government agreed in principle to provide

site at cost price (the cost of land resumption and compensation).

However, they have expressed doubts about the BBC's preferred

site as prominently visible from People's Republic of China,

and therefore unnecessarily provocative. Progress is being

made on consideration of another site.
