Source Details and Access

機密

Source was a 42 year old ethnic Chinese male, born in Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh Province, Northern Vietnam, who had crossed into China via "Friendship Pass" in September 1978. He had subsequently been resettled on the Yinghong (5391/7160) Overseas Chinese Tea Farm (OCTF) Yingde (5391/1795) Guangdong Province.

The Escape from China

Source had received letters from three uncles (nfi) who lived in the USA whilst he was living on the Yinghong OCTF, and received some money from them to pay for his escape. Source decided that he could organise an escape party from amongst his fellow workers at the OCTF, and on 30th May 1981 he led his group of 22 persons to Dawang, where he hoped to buy a boat and make the escape. According to Source it was common knowledge. that boats would be purchased at Dawang (1129/2489) Farm by Overseas Chinese wishing to leave China for Macau and Hong Kong. The journey from Yingde to Dawang was easily arranged and no authorisation was required.

3. On arrival at Dawang, Source and his group stayed with an unidentified friend at No.4 Brigade, Xingpong (5281/7127) area of Dawang Farm, and arranged with local residents to buy a boat. Source discovered that he had insufficient money to pay for a boat, so he joined with three other groups of intending escapees who had already made their way to Dawang in order to make their escape. These other groups had travelled from Hainan Island, and Guangxi Province, and, like his own group, comprised ethnic Chinese from Vietnam who had been resettled on Overseas Chinese Farms.

Source was

Using the extra money collected from the three new groups, able to buy a wooden boat for RMB 4000. Source and his group of 92 passengers left Xinglong on 11th June 1981, arriving in Macau on 13th June, and subsequently in Hong Kong on 14th June. During the voyage they paid bribes to militia personnel at Beijie (0554/5894), Look, and at Zhaoging (0022/1472) Lock. At Beifie they were detained for only a short period whilst the militiamen made sure that the passengers were all overseas Chinese and not local residents, whilst at Zhaoging they were detained overnight and searched for weapons.
