Thank you for your letter of 16 October, 1981 about Lord Geddes' amendment on the nomenclature of the citizenship of the British Dependent Territories.

I now confirm that, as I believe you already know, we are prepared to accept the amendment in the Lords, although we must replace it in the Commons with something less drastic in terms of rewriting the Bill. This is because we really cannot at this stage replace every reference to a citizen or citizenship of the British Dependent Territories. Our officials will be in touch about the precise way of achieving the desired objective.
