Chinese University of Hong Kong
Second alteration to Science Centre
and space for Technical Services Unit
22.
:
The Committee supported this project in principle
last year but suggested it should be completed in 1985-86. The Chinese University points out that considerable alteration works have to be carried out at the Science Centre to relocate various departments following the occupation of the Basic Medical Science Building in 1981 and the Second Extension to the Science Centre in 1983-84.
23.
Also, the space for setting up a Technical Services Unit is to be provided by adding an extra floor to the Second Extension to the Science Centre. Construction of the Second Extension is due to start in 1982 and it is sensible that the extra floor is built at the same time to avoid subsequent disruption which would result if the additional floor is added after occupation of the building.
24
The Committee therefore agrees that the project should start in 1982-83.

The proposals to add two additional floors (about 230 m net) to the Administration Building and modification
m2 works to facilitate access by the disabled are also supported.
26.
Student residential accommodation has been excluded from these recommendations. The Chinese University, feeling very strongly about the provision of additional hostels, hopes 'that Government will review its policy on student residence.
27.
The Committee does not support the proposals of an academic building for Arts, Business Administration and Social Science, and an extension to Science Centre Annex pending clarification on the application of British planning norms and having regard to the existing level of space utilisation at the Chinese University.
