Fathology Building Extension

18.

There is an urgent reed to improve from the safety point of view the environment in the Microbiology and Patho- logy Departments, and modernisation of the academic accommo- dation of the departments is also necessary. This follows a report received in February 1980 from an Inter-University Council Visitor, Professor Ian Phillips. The most urgent items are being carried out with minor works allocation.

19.

Full implementation of Professor Phillips' recommen- dations would require an addition of two and a half storeys to the Pathology Building. However, the structural elements of the building can only support another one and a half

storeys. The University is therefore considering the possi- bility of constructing, in addition to the one and a half

storeys, an extension at the back of the building to make up the deficiency of space. The estimated cost of this project is not yet available but meanwhile the Committee recommends a grant of $0.567 million in 1982-83 for a site investiga- tion and to meet the necessary expenditure on professional fees. It should be noted that the construction of the exten- tion may have to be abandoned for geotechnical reasons after a site investigation.

20.

Separately, Government is conducting a feasibility study of the Queen Mary Hospital Compound for the planned increase in hospital beds by 672. Further, the Medical Development Advisory Committee has recommended adding two storeys to the QMH Clinical Pathology Building close by for an enlarged hospital. In response to a request from the Secretary, UPGC, the Director of Medical and Health Services is looking into the possibility of meeting jointly the requiremat for additional laboratory accommodation of the Medical and Health Department and of the University within the QMH expansion

programme.

Other Projects

and recommends a grant of $5.004 million in 1982-83
