specialisation. On completion of the course the student would be immediately employable in Hong Kong business and would also have a basis for postgraduate study. Within the specialisations, more specific aims for the major areas stressed the focus of the Accounting, Marketing, Management and Secretarial Management majors. As previously stated, however, these majors had not been discussed with the staff concerned.

STUDENT ENTRY LEVEL-

The student entry level was described as being two 'A' levels. Members were not able to discover the average level of performance which would actually permit a student to enter the course. However, they met a small group of students whom they found to be lively and articulate. The students had mainly been educated at Lingnan from primary through secondary school and were very loyal to the College. They described it as having high standing in the community and believed that they would have no difficulty obtaining employment on graduation.

DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE AND ASSESSMENT METHODS

Members learnt that there was no formal Course Committee to develop or monitor the course. Nor was there. any Examination Board in existence to consider the assessment of student performance although one was proposed in the papers. The assessment itself was not fully developed and it emerged from later discussion that each member of staff at present used whatever method of assessment he thought appropriate or the students chose - this,ranged from in-course assessment to multiple choice questions marked by graduate assistants or formal written examinations but there was no attempt to rationalise the assessment process and members, therefore, were concerned about the assessment for the new programme and the likely level of student performance on completion of the course.

THE NEW COURSE CONTENT

The new course was described as substantially the same in content as that previously taught, although it would be presented in a slightly different order. Year 5 (the third year of the post - A level course) was intended to be more academic and possibly research orientated. However year 5 programmes in most areas had not as yet been developed and members were not able to get a clear
