visiting party cannot see that the provision is adequate for good quality work either at technician or degree level work.
18.4 The College has developed outline lists of equipment for
inclusion in the new Engineering laboratories. Members feel that even with that new technical equipment commissioned, the new laboratories are liable to look decidedly bare. The lists of equipment prepared need further thought and possibly advice from outside. No financial provision has yet been made for this equipment, but it will probably take $1,000,000. Three times that sum would make better provision and be more realistic.

Much of the present equipment is very well worn and out of date. The rock mechanics and geology laboratories are particularly deficient. Generally the present laboratories are likely to provide a crowded environment for students. They are multi purpose and are unlikely to achieve any one purpose well. The general level of provision of equipment for teaching is extremely poor except in Surveying where it is just adequate except that the photogrammetry facilities could be improved.
The Polytechnic on the other hand has in the departments six laboratories of total area of about 700m2 excluding the drawing office and general workshop, with four new ones allocated for use in 1981/82.
18.7 Members found that the level of provision in the
Polytechnic for both routine small equipment and for the larger items was poorer than they would expect to have been available to students studying up to CE1 part II level. The structures and concrete laboratories were particularly deficient and the equipment old. There is also a noticeable lack of instrumentation and measuring equipment commensurate with the aims and content of the courses being taught.
18.8 Generally speaking it seems that at the Polytechnic
laboratory work as a teaching instrument has been substantially neglected in comparison with the effort and resources devoted to the educational technology. Nevertheless, it must also be said that the senior staff are aware of the need to devote more time and effort to laboratory work and have the intention of doing so when they restructure their courses.
18.9
Despite the deficiencies in the Polytechnic laboratories, the level of provision and quality of laboratory work is superior to that at the Baptist College. The Industrial Centre makes a major contribution to the students' appreciation of practical work.
