The visiting party was met by consideration and courtesy at every stage from members of academic and

administrative staff at both the Polytechnic and at the Baptist College. This has made their task immeasurably easier and a pleasure. They would like to record their thanks to all the staff they met for the very

considerable help provided to them. Members look back on their visit as a busy but very pleasant period.

THE COURSES AND THEIR AIMS

The Baptist College now offers a consecutive five year programme based on fifth form HKCE entrance. It is structured to provide two years of Basic Studies comparable to but rather broader than the two years of sixth form study in secondary schools. There follows two years leading to a Senior Diploma followed by a further one year leading to the Honours Diploma. Admission to the Senior Diploma is by a good performance in the Basic Studies or Hong Kong A level. This visit has concerned itself with the final three years of this programme.

The first year of the new Senior Diploma commenced in September 1980. The old four year diploma continues to run out with students currently on the third and fourth year of that course. The new Basic Studies programme has also commenced and the first output will emerge in 1981. The team did not concern itself at all with the Basic Studies programme.

The recognition thus far achieved by the course is based on the old structure, and with the new course this may need to be re-established.

The Polytechnic offers three year Higher Diploma courses in Structural Engineering and in Civil Engineering. There is a subsequent programme of instruction for students sitting the CEI part II examinations. the Associatship in Civil and Structural Engineering. There are also two year Diploma courses in Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering. The Diploma and Higher Diploma course start nominally from the HKCE (see section 16 below).

The Baptist College Honours Diploma course and the Polytechnic Higher Diploma course start at approximately the same level and both last 3 years. The Polytechnic Associateship course is taken subsequent to the HD course and there is no comparable course at the Baptist College.
