Since the purpose of the allocation is different, and because there are no FTE data available (which allow for "servicing" etc), direct comparison with HKP is not possible. However, the allocation seems low by UK norms, and from observation substantial increase would appear to be necessary.
Library
HKP Factual
An extensive and highly developed system. Study facilities and provision of self-learning materials are available.
HKBC Factual
A significant proportion of the chemistry bookstock is old and out-of-date. The number of more recent volumes is limited yet includes some which are highly specialised and not of direct relevance either to the proposed programme or to current staff activities. There are many recommended texts which are not held by the library at all. Duplication in the bookstock is not allowed. The journal provision and current subscriptions are also limited and unbalanced. The Department allocations for 1980/81 are HK$ 12500 for books, and HK$ 2500-3000 for journals. Availability of study, space is very low. There is no access for students to learning aids.
HKBC Comment
Substantial enhancement of texts is essential, with the specific needs of the proposed programme in mind. Journal stock and subscriptions need to be reviewed, as do systems for accessibility by students. The provision of study facilities needs significant increase and learning aid facilities need to be provided.
