The standards of "housekeeping" and maintenance

are very low and seemingly arise from the lack of technician support. Three additional technicians would be desirable, 1-2 essential, together with an improvement in the administrative staff support.

Equipment

HKP Factual

With the exception of Chemical Technology, for which the need for enhancement is recognised, the general level (standard and quantity) of equipment (including instrumentation) appears adequate for the present work. However, there is only one IR spectrometer, one UV/visible spectrometer, one atomic absorption spectrophotometer and one HPLC.

HKBC Factual

The provision is very poor in general terms, although there are a few items of advanced standing (nmr spectrometer, polarograph and a new atomic absorption spectrophotometer).

HKBC Comment

Substantial capital injection is needed at once and on a continuing basis. If this provision is not made the objectives of the programme cannot be achieved.

Recurrent Allocations for Consumables Etc

HKP Factual

The current allocation is HK$ 550 pa per FTE student, for consumables. All "equipment", eg a stopwatch, is outside this allocation and is subject to separate 'bids'.

HKBC Factual

For 1980/81, HK$ 85000 is available to the Department for "laboratory expenses", which covers all items up to HK$3000-HK$4000 each.
