2. COLOUR TV'S (CTV'S)
BACKGROUND
Imports of CTV's are presently controlled by the PAL patents system. Manufacturing licences are granted by the originators of PAL,Telefunken, the terms of which include a limit on the magnitude of exports which is permitted. By the time this system comes to an end (2/3 years time) the major Hong Kong CTV manufacturing companies will have become a significant threat to the UK industry as a source of imported CTV's.Although we should not over estimate the capacity of Hong Kong industry for sustained high volume production, we should expect at least a capacity of 100,000 sets for exports to the UK per annum.
LINE TO TAKE
1. The Secretary of State might like to express his hope that a system of orderly marketing of CTV's can be agreed between the Hong Kong and UK industries.
3. TELETEXT AND PRESTEL/PRIVATE VIEWDATA SYSTEMS
a) TELETEXT
CURRENT POSITION
In the UK teletext systems such as Ceefax and Oracle are already operating, with almost 200,000 receivers in use.
There are similar systems in a number of European countries including Austria, Sweden, Germany and Holland.
In Australia teletext has strong support from the commercial services ; while in USA a commercial trial was launched in Chicago earlier this year by Mr Baker.
VG Electronics, through their agents in Hong Kong, have been trying to interest the Hong Kong broadcasters in a teletext demonstration system.
