Cross harbour links between the Island and Kowloon are provided by efficient ferry services, a Mass Transit Railway, and a four-lane, 1.5 kilometre Cross Harbour Tunnel.

There are efficient railway services running to the Chinese border. The system will be considerably improved by 1982 when the modernisation and electrification works, now under way, are completed. An interchange with the Mass Transit Railway will integrate the two systems into one network.

Mass Transit Railway

Hong Kong is proud of the most recent addition to its communications the 15.5 kilometre underground railway which links the industrial town of Kwun Tong to the major urban centres in Kowloon and to the Island's Central District.

Built within four years at a cost of about HK$5,800 million (US$1,160 million), it is being extended by 10.5 kilometres before the end of 1982 to the industrial township of Tsuen Wan at a cost of about HK$4,100 million (US$820 million).

About half a million passengers use it daily, and by the mid-1980s nearly two million will benefit from its speed, reliability and air-conditioned comfort.

The Kwai Chung Container Terminal is the largest in Asia.
