Medium Heavy Engineering

Hong Kong has a firmly-established industry making and repairing freight containers which comply with Lloyd's Register of Shipping and American Bureau of Shipping standards. Other products are air- conditioners, fork lift trucks, aluminium and brass extrusions, window frames, steel furniture and marine outboard engines.

Shipbuilding and Repairing

The major graving docks are capable of handling ships up to 36,000 tonnes deadweight or about 210 metres in length. There are four floating docks—the largest with over 101,000 tonnes capacity. Deep- water quays alongside major shipyards have ham- merhead cranes of up to 150 tonnes capacity. The smaller yards tend to build specialised craft in wood, steel and ferroconcrete for harbour, river or ocean- going trades; and pleasure craft and yachts in wood or fibreglass.

The skill and industry of our artisans and labourers have encouraged shipowners to bring their vessels to Hong Kong for repairs, conversions, overhauls and surveys. Land has been sold to several com- panies to improve our shipbuilding and repairing facilities.
