Chief Secretary's visit to Guangdong

Sir Jack Cater visited Guangdong at the invitation of Governor Liu Tianfu
from 9 to 13 March. Apart from Governor Liu, the Chief Secretary also met Party 1st Secretary Ren Zhongyi, Vice-Governor Zeng Dingshi (economic affairs), Vice-Governor Wang Ning (security matters) and Vice-Governor Liang Xiang (Shenzhen Special Economic Zone). The visit afforded the opportunity to discuss not only Hong Kong's economic links with Guangdong but other issues of mutual concern, namely, immigration, water supplies, cross-border cooperation
and control of the spread of rabies.
Postmaster General's Visit to Guangzhou

The Postmaster General, Mr A.C. Heathcote, visited Guangzhou at the invitation of the Director of the Guangdong Posts and Telecommunications Bureau, Mr Li Qingwan, from 23 to 27 March. A wide range of subjects of
common interest were discussed.
Visit by Guangdong Customs delegation to Hong Kong

Between 23 and 27 March a delegation led by the Head of the Guangdong Customs Department, Mr Sun Chuanlu visited Hong Kong at the invitation of the Director of Trade Industry and Customs. The invitation had been extended during the visit in October 1980 of the Director of the Cuangdong Foreign Trade Bureau, Mr Feng Xueyan. The focus of the recent visit was the problem of smuggling into China, although wider issues and the prospects for closer cooperation between the two Customs Services were also discussed.
Microwave communications system between Hong Kong and Shenzhen
4. An agreement was signed on 17 March between Cable and Wireless and the Guangdong Posts and Telecommunications Bureau for a joint venture to install a high capacity Microwave System between Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The system will provide television relay, data transmission and bureaufax' services. The present long distance telephone, telegram and telex services will also be expanded to cope with the growth in demand for telecommunication services..
