"Current Hong Kong-China Economic Developments Du Monthly Notes

- --

INDEX

Please refer to the paper Current Hong Kong-China Economic Developments Monthly Notes, the August edition of hich has recently been circulated. This memorandum serves as a reminder of the general aim and purpose of these Monthly Notes and seeks your assistance in ensuring that they remain as informative, pertirent and topical as possible.

2.

The summary, largely unstructured Monthly Notes attempt to provide an up-to-date and quick reference indication of significant developments in Hong Kong's general economic relationship with China. Because of the special economic status in China enjoyed by Guangdong and Fujian, the Notes focus greater attention on Hong Kong's relations with these neighbouring Provinces. Furthermore,

the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Guangdong and Fujian, warrants closer and more detailed consideration of this particular economic experiment, especially-as it affects Shenzhen (and to a lesser extent Zhuhai).

ろ。

The Monthly Notes have also formed the basis for longer, more detailed background papers (e.g. "Notes on Hong Kong's Economic Links with China, February 1981 and "Shenzhen Progress Report" June 1981) which will be revised periodically.

11

Within this broad framework, the Monthly Notes include whatever information has come to light on the following topics:

(a) Trade Statistics: Hong Kong/China, Hong Kong/

Guangdong, Hong Kong/Fujian, Hong Kong/Shenzhen;

(b) Banking: Activities of Chinese banks in Hong

Kong, including remittances to China through these banks;

(c) Hong Kong Investments: Joint ventures, cooperative production and compensation trade between Hong Kong companies and companies in China as a whole, JES and Shenzhen in particular;

(a)

Chinese Investments: In Hong Kong (real estate development, go-downs, wharves, etc.);
