Further details have emerged about the instructions given by LIAO Chengzhi to communist press officials at the meeting in Guangzhou in September 1981 (para 16, October 1981 Report). Their articles were to promote socialism and modernisation; there was to be no more discussion on China's past errors, especially those of the Cultural Revolution; no comment was to be made on China's foreign policy.

During the month the communist press has begun reporting criticisms of Hong Kong Government's policy towards local industry. There are signs that this may be part of an official low key campaign, the first of its kind since 1978.

Following an increase in prices, the sales of the two major communist newspapers, Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Pao, are reported to have fallen by over 10 per cent and 7 per cent respectively. The papers are trying to recover their readers by featuring crossword puzzles, games and financial and racing news. The non-communist press has not suffered in the same way, although its prices too have risen.

The Chung Hua and Commercial Press Joint Printing Co., local communist publishing firm, are looking for overseas markets and have circulated potential customers among overseas Chinese communities.

17, October 1981 Report) returned to Hong Kong to attend the premiere of the film she had directed, "The Savage Land". Despite its success at the Venice Film Festival, it flopped in Hong Kong, running for only a week.
