KMT
20.
Pro-KMT organisations held ceremonies to mark the 95th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat Sen. As in 1980,
the events were part of a campaign to counter communist united front work. Disturbed by what they see as the initial success of the CPG in persuading overseas Chinese to assist in China's modernisation programme, the KMT are considering how such help might be discouraged.

Charges of disorderly conduct brought against CHAU Hing-cheun and a companion, both of the Wanderers Magazine, in connection with events at a commemoration ceremony at the NCNA (para 22, June 1981 Report), were dismissed by the court on

Sov Bloc

A Soviet passenger liner underwent repairs in Hong Kong during the month. This was the first Soviet ship to be repaired in Hong Kong since the departure of the Soviet Marine Superintendents in July 1980 when it was said that no more ships would come to Hong Kong for repair until the Marine Superintendents were allowed to return (para 23, July 1980 Report). No attempt was made to bring in a Superintendent for the contract and it is likely that supervision was provided by a crew member listed as a
marine surveyor SECRET B
