Communist schools are seeking ways to implement the instruction from Beijing to be self supporting. With this in view, the senior communist educational official in Hong Kong, NG Hong-man, called a meeting of representatives from local communist schools to discuss methods of raising their educational standards; the School Certificate Examination; the improvement of students' behaviour; and extra-curricular activities. topics reflect the current communist emphasis on the importance of higher standards both in academic performance and personal behaviour.

A recent article in the communist press regretted that private schools in Hong Kong were being "eliminated as a result of frequent Government interference and not by fair competition" and accused the Government of using private schools only as a means of filling a gap in the Government educational system. This is a further sign that the communists realise that, if their schools are to survive, they will have to find common cause with other private schools.

The communist influenced Chinese Language Society held a symposium to discuss "The status of Chinese language among primary and secondary students" which was attended by lecturers from both Universities and the three Teachers' Training Colleges, together with representatives from the Education DEpartment.

In collaboration with Chinan University, the communist influenced Springfield Culturo-Educational Co. Ltd. is setting up a centre in Guangzhou to translate economic and scientific information passing into and out of China. The company is already running an English language school in Guangzhou (para 14, September 1980 Report).
