In March 1981 at a meeting in England, the rival World Badminton Federation (WBF) agreed to merge with the International
Badminton Federation (IBF). China is a member of the WBF and
Taiwan is a member of the IBF. Both will be represented on the new
unified organisation with Taiwan known as the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association. A meeting to complete the unification will be held in Tokyo later this year.

The TUC affiliated Amalgamated Union of Seafarers (AUS) has
been given affiliation by the International Transport Workers Federation on condition that membership be confined to seaman's
grade of rating and below and that officers transfer to the Merchant
Navy Officers Guild, Hong Kong (MNOG, HK). The alliance of the right-wing AUS and politically neutral MNOG, HK may provide a challenge to the bigger FTU affiliated Hong Kong Seamen's Union which this year has reported losses in both membership and finances.

Because of the closure of the Hong Kong United Dockyard Ltd. Kowloon Dockyard and transfer of workers to Tsing Yi Island, the FTU
union at the Kowloon Dockyard, the Hong Kong United Kowloon Dockyard Workers Union, has amalgamated with another FTU union- the Hong Kong United Dockyard Employees Union.
