In line with the current communist policy of greater

emphasis on United Front work, the communist controlled

Federation of Trade Unions and some of its individual member

unions have given monetary help to union members who suffered

a result of a recent major fire.

Civil Service unions continue to be active. The

Executive Grade Association has been pressing the Government

to halt its current recruitment at matriculation level, urging

that only graduates be admitted to the grade: there is some

talk of industrial action. The Housing Department Estate

Caretakers' Union is demanding negotiations on better

incremental scales and is considering legal action if it is

not satisfied. Eight unions representing a cross section of

employees in the Urban Services Department have held a joint

meeting to protest against changes in standard working hours

and are to hold negotiations with the Department.

The Wanderers' Association's application for registration

continue its activities in the name of the "Wanderers Magazine", Ì
