A secret source has revealed that the KMT in Taiwan has allocated its Hong Kong organisation the sum of HK$50,000 for "operational expenses" in the District Board elections to be held next year (para 24, August 1981 Report), apparently to help pro-KMT candidates win seats. Meanwhile, the local KMT has been encouraging its followers to register as electors.

PRESSURE GROUPS

A new group consisting of academics and magazine and newspaper editors has been formed to focus public attention on Hong Kong's future after 1997. The group, provisionally entitled "The Research Society for the Future of Hong Kong" is applying for registration as a limited company. A leading figure is CHENG Yu-shek, a lecturer in political science at the Chinese University and chairman of the Hong Kong Observers.

The Asian Students Association "Workshop on Youth and Development in Asia" (para 25, July 1981 Report) took place between 28 August and 3 September 1981. The joint sponsors were the Association and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. It attracted little interest in the press.

The China Affairs Society of the Hong Kong University Students Union has been organising student tours of communist factories, scenic areas and universities in China. The aim has been to promote friendship between students and their Chinese counterparts and to foster interest in the Society.

Immigrants from China without onward travel documents totalled 4,169 in September (a daily average of 149), in conformity with the quota observed by the Chinese authorities.
