About 1997

The chairman of World-Wide Shipping Group, Sir Yue-kong Pac, addressing a lunch on HK's future at the Foreign Correspondents' Club yesterday, pointed out that there is no need to worry about 1997. He said HK has a role to play for much longer than the next 16 years.

Sir Yue-kong Pao said the Chinese Government has already done much by stressing repeatedly, in words and in actions, that while different views are held over the treaty position, this need not interfere with Hong Kong's position both before and after 1997. He said he is satisfied with the concern expressed recently by both the Chinese and the British Governments in preserving HK's status quo far into the future. He believed that some ways could be found to give guarantee in the form of a formal agreement on the HK issue as hoped for by some.

Acquisition of Overseas Enterprises by Hong Kong Reflects the Local

Economic Strength

He pointed out that there is no apparent reason why we should be obsessed with what is going to happen 16 years later. He said he is mor?! worried about the possible freezing of our assets by other countries in the near future. He cited Iran as an example, and asked who could predict and say with confidence that there would be no change in the other countries. He proposed therefore that people might as well set their mind on more practical issues and not. to worry unnecessarily for the far away 1997 issue. He said by so doing we would be able to guarantee the benefits Hong Kong can offer to China and so in turn better guarantee HK's future.

He quoted from the poem by Ai Qing published by the People's Daily on the eye of Lord Carrington's visit to China (28th March). "You (Hong Kong) are the inlet and outlet of the Motherland. You are the venue for exchanges of goods .... All these years, you have created inestimable wealth for the motherland." He said these words have given him more confidence than statistics and professional analyses.
