PINION POLL ON 1997 Part IV

A survey on members of public

It was conducted in three ways i.c. (a) By telephone - 500 names extracted

from telephone directory.

(b) Street poll 3 days at MTR stations, ferry piers and bus, stops, 234 people interviewed.

(c) 168 people in 30 different professions

interviewed.

The results are as follows :

(1) Do you wish HK to be taken back by China ?

Majority prefers maintaining present status

Of the people who did not wish HK to be taken back by China, half of them held that China's policy did not suit HK while the others believed that HK's economy would be hard hit if it was handed back to China.

30 per cent wish to emigrate

30 per cent of the interviewees wished to settle abroad while 66.6 per cent of them gave negative answer. They latter thought they could not adapt themselves to the living environment overseas.

Also

The minority of them did not believe China would take back HK. they were happy with HK's present position and therefore, would not consider moving to other countries.
