concurred. The recommendation was subsequently approved

and Civil Service Commission notified.

The new procedure

will apply to the recruitment of about 12 overseas officers

in 1982.

Overseas Recruitment

During the report period, 639 vacancies within

the PSC's purview were advertised locally; on 30 April 1981,

424 posts were under recruitment overseas (including 12

posts of Police Inspector). During the same period 121

newly appointed officers (including 14 Police Inspectors)

assumed duty from overseas. A high level of overseas

recruitment is likely to continue in 1981.

Recruitment to the rank and file of the

Police Force totalled 378 against a recruitment target of

500. On 30 April 1981 there were 1,303 vacancies in the

rank and file establishment of 19,986.

The Director of Public Works has advised

against accepting alternative qualifications to UK

Chartered membership for appointments to the professional

grades in PWD. The implications of this advice is being

examined by the Civil Service Branch. At present there

are 103 vacancies of engineers and architects in PWD.
