On leaving University, John Swaine joined the Administrative Service, but later left to read for the Bar. An Eurasian, he is a widely respected member of the legal profession in Hong Kong. As a Queen's Counsel he is hard-working, thorough, sensible and highly persuasive. In this he perseveres through very regular attacks of severe migraine headaches which cause him a great deal of pain. As a man he is quiet and soft-spoken. He is easy-going, however, and very approachable, though he can hold firmly to his views once his mind is made up.
