Transferred to the Board of Trade for duty in Administration of Enemy Property Department through the Limited Executive Class Reconstruction Competition.

Later that year he was promoted and continued to serve in Administration of Enemy Property Department investigating German claims to United Kingdom assets not reported to the custodians of Enemy Property. Drafting necessary corres- pondence to United Kingdom concerns and Control Commission in Germany.

Following his success in the Limited Administrative Class Competition, 1949, he remained in the Board of Trade in Statistics Division in the Census of Production, working on a pilot census and surveys of the distribution of industry and horsepower in industry.

Transferred to Industries and Manufactures 1B engaged on the examination of applications submitted by the National Farmers' Union for increased protective duties on horticul- tural produce.

On promotion he remained in Industries and Manufactures 1B, joining the GATT Tariff Conference in Torquay where he negotiated on the Key industries, Revenue and allied sections of the Tariff with (mainly) the USA, Germany and Benelux. Continued to work on tariffs for about three years.

Appointed UK Trade Commissioner in Queensland engaged

on normal trade promotion work and representational duties.

On return to the United Kingdom he was posted to Tariff Division dealing with questions relating to United Kingdom tariff policy.

Promoted and remained in Tariff and Import Policy Division pending his next Trade Commissioner posting.

Appointed Trade Commissioner in New Delhi where he remained for four and a half years.

Transferred on loan to the Diplomatic Service when that Department took over responsibility for the Trade Commission Service.

On return to the Board he joined Distribtuion of Industry Division in charge of the branch concerned with general policy under the Local Employment Acts and Office Control - both policy and the consideration of cases referred to

Head Quarters.
