Powers under the Immigration Ordinance suggested to be conferred on Senior Immigration Assistants

and Immigration Assistants

to examine persons on arrival in or departure from Hong Kong and examine any person believed to be landing in or remaining in Hong Kong without permission or contravening a condition of stay (section 4);

to require a person liable to examination to proceed to a specified place for examination (section 5(3));

to require a person being examined to furnish information required for the purposes of the Ordinance (section 5(7));

to give permission for a person to land in Hong Kong (section 7, 9, 10 and 11);

to impose a limitation of stay or other conditions on a person permitted to land (section 11(2));

to cancel or vary any condition of stay or enlarge the period of stay allowed in Hong Kong (section 11(5A));

(vii) to permit a member of a ship's crew to land in Hong Kong

(section 12);

(viii) to require an alien to furnish a photograph (section 15(1));

to inspect the record kept by the keeper of premises (section 17(4));

to board and search any ship, aircraft, vehicle or train which has arrived in Hong Kong (not being a ship of war or military aircraft) (Section 56(1)(a));

to search any person being examined other than a person who has the right to land, and any property belonging to such person or under his control (section 56(1)(b));

(xii) to detain certain documents produced during immigration examina- tion etc for not more than seven days (section 56(1)(c));

(xiii) to arrest and detain any person if he has reason to suspect

such a person has committed an offence under the Immigration Ordinance (section 56(1)(a));

to seize, remove and detain any thing which may be forfeited under the Immigration Ordinance or contains evidence of an offence under the Ordinance (section 56(1)(e));

to search any person who is or who has been arrested or detained under the Immigration Ordinance and any property belonging to him or under his control (section 56(1)(g));

to take custody of a person arrested by members of Her Majesty's forces for being suspected to have entered or remained in Hong Kong unlawfully (section 57A(2)); and

(xvii) to require a person who may not land in Hong Kong without

permission to produce an identity card relating to himself (section 62(1)).
