of the 6, 952 cases who registered as having been in Hong Kong at midnight on the 23rd October, only 5,798 reported for further processing. They have been found to comprise a large number of cases requiring further investigation. An examination of these cases will be completed by the end of March 1981. The breakdown of the cases is as follows

have been allowed to stay and are being issued with ID cards progressively from the 10th December,
have been sent for detention and processing to the Victoria Immigration Centre, and 3, 176 cases are being further examined, of the 3, 485 cases who registered as having been in Hong Kong at midnight on the 23rd October and who came or overstayed from places other than China, only 2, 975 cases reported for further processing. Of this number about 2, 200 are here illegally and 700 have overstayed having originally entered legally. So far 286 have been recommended for permission to stay. 152 are being considered for removal, 296 are being processed further and the balance are being interviewed progressively. This processing will be completed by the end of January 1981;
have been processing 401 cases admitted to Victoria Immigration Centre. Of these 315 were transferred there as a result of enquiries by the Immigration Depart- ment at their various processing centres and 86 have been transferred there by the Police. (4) The Immigration Tribunal has since 28th October been examining appeals against removal orders authorised by the Director of Immigration or his Deputy. A Chief Adjudicator and 39 Adjudicators have been appointed, and sitting in pairs they have received 203 appeals during the first 6 weeks of the Tribunal's operation. 180 of these appeals have been disposed of, all being dismissed as being made on grounds other than the statutory grounds stipulated under the Immigration Ordinance; of these appeals 81 have been referred to the Secretary for Security for further consideration of any special humanitarian aspects involved.
