HONG KONG: REINFORCEMENT OF GARRISON

1. The Secretary of State agreed early in June to the Governor's request for an

infantry battalion to reinforce the Hong Kong garrison this Autumn. My minute of

30 May refers.

2. S of S's agreement assumed that there would be no significant improvement in

the security situation in the meantime. This minute is to confirm that the

situation has not improved; in fact the illegal immigration statistics for August

show an increase in the numbers repatriated to China.

3.

The 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Wales is therefore due to deploy

to Hong Kong between 13 and 18 September (with a small advance party leaving on

4 September). The battalion will return in December as planned.
