Ose already settled in the UK by the time the new law comes into operation would acquire British Citizenship automatically on completing 5 years residence. Those overseas would become British Overseas Citizens but the special voucher scheme would continue for them unchanged. After they have been settled in the United Kingdom for a period of 5 years they would be able to apply for British Citizenship.
8. What benefits would British Overseas Citizens resident overseas derive from their status?
As British Overseas Citizens they would be entitled to British passports and to the usual protection and assistance from British consular authorities.
