HK and Britain should be Members of Same Family
The British Ministry of Trade has finally reversed the (British Civil Aviation Authority's) decision on the long dispute over the right to operate the Hong Kong-London route. Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong-based airline, together with British Caledonian Airways and Laker Airways, has been given permission to fly between Hong Kong and London, thus bringing to an end the monopoly enjoyed by British Airways on the route.
Cathay Pacific is scheduled to begin its services in July, and British Caledonian in August. Laker, which has not yet been granted a licence by the Hong Kong authorities, may have to wait for some time. Therefore, it is expected that from July, at least three carriers will compete on the Hong Kong-London route.
As a result of free competition, air fares from Hong Kong to London will definitely be lower and travellers will stand to benefit.
In our opinion, the most important thing about the British Government's final decision on the route is that it has helped wipe out discordance between London and Hong Kong. Just as Sir Yuet-keung Kan put it when he commented on the case in London yesterday: Britain and Hong Kong should treat each other as members of the same family. In view of the special ties between Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, closer co-operation can only benefit both sides.
