Gain or loss
As a result of an appeal by Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways, the British authorities have decided that the air route between Hong Kong and London be shared by British Airways, British Caledonian Airways, Laker Airways and CPA. On the face of it, Hong Kong has won the battle. However, all four carriers may stand to lose because of inevitably fierce competition resulting from limited passenger demand.
Some local people expressed dissatisfaction when the British authorities gave approval to only two British carriers to operate the Hong Kong-Britain air service. They felt that the British authorities not only wanted Hong Kong to foot huge defence bills but also neglected Hong Kong's interests. This has led to cool relations between Hong Kong and Britain. In addition to suppression of the right to operate the air service, there has been discrimination against Hong Kong-issued British passports. Now that the British authorities have made such a decision (on the air route) after the Government and people of Hong Kong have made strong representations, we would like to see what sort of deal Britain will give the Hong Kong delegation headed by the Secretary for Security which has gone to London to seek an increase in the Hong Kong garrison to curb illegal immigration. We trust that Britain will make a wise decision after comparing the economic benefits derived from Hong Kong and the New Hebrides.
