1. Although it is over three weeks since I left Hong Kong, I have only just returned to London following a week's

'familiarisation' in China and two weeks' leave in South- East Asia. This accounts for the delay in my writing to you as the most appropriate representative of the Hong Kong Government to express my thanks for the first-rate programme which was arranged for me and for the courtesy and enthusiasm with which I was received throughout my visit. John Curle and his people, in particular, could not have been more helpful and the entire programme was executed with blinding efficiency.

2. Back at my desk, Hong Kong no longer seems so distant and mysterious. I hope that the end result of such visits by the department will also make London appear less remote and aloof to those at the Hong Kong end.

I am sorry I did not have more time with Derek March and I hope he will not mind my copying this letter to him by way of a short-hand way of acknowledging his contribution to the programme.
