PROPOSED VISIT BY MFT TO HONG KONG: 31 AUGUST TO 7 SEPTEMBER

This letter seeks the Foreign Commonwealth Secretary's agreement to Mr Parkinson undertaking an official visit to Hong Kong from 31 August to 7 September inclusive.

The visit is designed to promote UK textile exports to Hong Kong through Mr Parkinson leading a small mission of senior textile manufacturers (the party will include a trade union representative and two journalists).

The flight schedule is:

SUNDAY 31 AUGUST

10.00 Depart Heathrow on British Airways flight BA 3 arriving Hong Kong at 09.40 on Monday 1 September

SATURDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

21.00 Depart Hong Kong on British Airways flight BA 20 arriving Heathrow at 06.25 on Sunday 7 September.

The British Trade Commission in Hong Kong are pushing for firm dates in order to organise the programme, and in particular, as an important Hong Kong figure is prepared to change his itinerary in order to accommodate Mr Parkinson's visit. I should therefore be grateful if you would let me know as soon as possible the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary's answer ideally by close of play tomorrow.
