PROPOSED VISIT BY MINISTER FOR TRADE (TO HONG KONG

Problem

REGISTRY NO. 51 51

10 JUL 1980

PA रिजर

23/7

REGISTRY Action n

A 1. Mr Mortimer's letter of 7 July seeks the Secretary of State's

agreement to Mr Parkinson visiting Hong Kong from 31 August to

7 September.

Recommendation,

2.

I recommend that the Secretary of State agrees to this.

Draft attached.

Background

3. This proposal originated with the Hong Kong Government.

The idea is largely to encourage British manufacturers of

textile fabrics to sell more to Hong Kong where the garment

industry is growing and where there are considerable opportunities.

A visit by Mr Parkinson in early September would to some extent

counter an American textile exhibition which is to take place in

Hong Kong later in the month.
