There is no full-time confidential registrar.
papers and telegrams are handled on a part-time basis
by Mrs.Hoggett (LEIII) who as well as being the assistant
registrar is responsible for confidential messengerial
services and assistance with typing. She would be quite
unable to cope with additional classified registry work.
At present there is no physical space in which to
accommodate a full China Trade registry;
there is no UK based PA in the BTC and a British
Personal Assistant would be essential for the China
Trade Unit;
it should be noted that no member of the locally engaged
Chinese staff is cleared to see classified papers not
even 'RESTRICTED';

at the moment there is no spare office space in Gammon
House. The lease on the premises expires on 19 April, 1980
when an opportunity will occur to take back approximately
3,200 square feet at present sub-let to Thomas Cook and Determined
Productions Hong Kong Limited. If it was decided to take
over the whole of the 9th floor of Gammon House, we should
have a total area of approximately 13,900 square feet.
