SITUATION REPORT

(a) Issue of Visas in Hong Kong

The Political Adviser reported that the

Chinese authorities had asked for permission

to open an office in Hong Kong, to be called

the Hong Kong Visa Office of the Foreign

Affairs Bureau of Kwantung Province, for

the purpose of issuing visas for visits to

China. The Governor confirmed to

Sir S.Y. Chung that the Foreign and

Commonwealth Office had agreed in principle

to the issue of visas in Hong Kong but said

that he wished to have the Council's advice

on whether an office should be opened for

the purpose and, if so, on an acceptable

name for that office. The Council noted

that the Political Adviser would advise

the New China News Agency that while

there was no objection to visas being

issued in Hong Kong, the Government would
