The figure of illegal immigrants interviewed and accepted as having evaded control since 30 November 1974 is 27,153. The up-to-date ratio of interceptions against evasions is 1:2.22, excluding the 1, 506 N. Vietnamese cases. (Allowing six months surfacing lag of the evaders, the running ratio as at 30 June 1978 is now 1:3.96).
Macao

During the month, 41 illegal immigrants were referred to this department by the Marine Police. 36 were repatriated and the remaining 5 were still being processed. In addition, 3 cases where the illegal immigrants were arrested in previous months were finalized in December. 1 was repatriated and 2 were allowed to stay.

On 18 December, 34 illegal immigrants were intercepted by the Marine Police on board a Hong Kong fishing junk at Po Chue Tam, Lantao Island. 3 aiders and abettors were also arrested and convicted. 2 of them were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and sentence on the remaining 1 will be passed on 13 February 1979. An application for forfeiture of the junk is under process.

Since November 1975, the total of illegal immigrants interviewed and accepted as having entered from Macao is 2,427. Of these, 390 were arrested, 1,676 surfaced through ROP claiming illegal entry from Macao and 361 surfaced through ROP falsely claiming illegal entry from elsewhere.
Registration of illegals

During December, 4, 575* persons (compared with 7,033 last month) registered with the Registration of Persons Office, claiming to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources. The figure includes 4,488** persons (compared with 6,908 last month) claiming to have come from China and 41# (compared with 58 last month) from Macao.

Since 1962, the Registration of Persons Office has registered a total of 344,898 persons who claimed to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources, primarily China. The total since January 1970 is 131, 143 of whom 112,606 claimed to have come from China and 6,301 from Macao. The true figure of illegal immigrants from China is somewhat lower and the true figure of Macao somewhat higher, because of attempts to conceal the true place of origin on registration to avoid repatriation. Separate statistics of confirmed place of origin are shown in para 10 for China, and para 13 for Macao.
