Dear Mrs. Thatcher,
I have been requested by the President of the Methodist Conference, the Rev. William Gowland, to write to you further on the matter of the South- East Asian refugees, concerning whom he forwarded to you the resolutions of the Methodist Conference last month.
He is happy to know that there will be a special international conference next week to consider the issues, and would like to convey through you the Methodist people's good wishes to the conference and their hopes that it will enable effective action to be taken by the world community. The President believes that if your Government were to express early in the conference, or in advance of it, Britain's readiness to receive at least 15,000 of the. refugees for resettlement in this country, as requested by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, (a request unanimously supported by our Conference), this would help greatly to achieve this end, whereas hesitation could prejudice the success of the conference as well as be detrimental to the prestige of this country.
Mr. Gowland understands that you will have received a request from the Standing Conference for Refugees to receive a deputation representing all the Churches. He hopes that you will be willing to receive such a group and would look forward to participating personally.
Yours sincerely,
John P. Hastings
