VIETNAMESE REFUGEES: LORD INVERFORTH'S LETTER OF 25 MAY TO THE
LORD PRIVY SEAL
1. We did not reply to Lord Inverforth's letter as soon as this
was received in the Department, because we learned that consideration
S
was also being given in the Department of Trade to his further letter,
of 30 May, to the Prime Minister; we also awaited decisions from
the Cabinet discussion of 31 May.
2.
The Secretary of State for Trade has agreed to receive Lord Inverforth and other representatives of the British shipping industry at 1000 hrs on Tuesday 5 June to discuss substantively
points affecting the Bank Line's ships. Meanwhile, the
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Trade, Mr Tebbit, has
written to Lord Inverforth with an interim reply on matters raised
in the letter to the Lord Privy Seal.
3. In the circumstances, I submit a draft reply, which makes
reference to the forthcoming meeting with the Secretary of State for Trade, but alludes also to the Prime Minister's call for
international conference on the refugees' issue.
