UNHCR CONSULTATIONS ON SOUTH EAST ASIA: GENEVA, 11-12 DECEMBER 1978

At the request of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High' Commissioner for Refugees (of which the UK is a member), Mr Poul Hartling, the High Commissioner for Refugees, invited interested governments to attend consultations in Geneva on 11-12 December to discuss the Indo-China refugee problem and
$ easures to contribute to a solution.

The purpose of the consultations was two-fold:
૯)
to seek additional resettlement places in Third countries for refugees and displaced persons on the widest possible basis;
!
to seek additional financial assistance for the High Commissioner for Refugees' programme in South East
Asia.
The results were:
(1) the pledge of some 9,000 additional resettlement
places;
(2) the offer to the High Commissioner of an additional
US $12 million (the UK pledged US $1 million).
