HOUSE OF LORDS: UNSTARRED QUESTION: INDO-CHINA REFUGEE PROBLEM
1.
APS/Lord Goronwy Roberts minuted on 1 February about the
unstarred question on the Indo-China refugee problem which Lord
Elton has put down for Answer on 14 February.
2. Lord Elton takes a keen interest in this refugee problem
and last Monday called a meeting of a number of British voluntary
The agencies in order to brief himself for this mini-debate.
Secretary of the Standing Conference on Refugees, who attended
Lord Elton's meeting, tells us that Lord Elton may wish to
raise the following topics during the debate:
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
He may urge that more attention should be
given to the refugees in camps in Thailand
and may claim that the "boat people" have been
given too much publicity;
He will wish to know the Hong Kong Government's
policy on the admission of Vietnamese refugees
and may want an explanation of the Hong Kong
Government's actions over the Huey Fong. lle
will probably also wish to know the numbers of
refugees now in Hong Kong;
He may ask what more Britain can do to help
Hong Kong;
