DRAFT LETTER

The Lord Elton House of Lords London SW1

Type 1 +

From

Department

During the Debate in the House on 14 February on the Indo-

China refugee problem, I undertook to let you know whether

the quota of 1,500 Vietnamese refugees (whom the Home

Secretary announced on 17 January would be admitted to the

United Kingdom over a period of 12 to 15 months) would be

subtracted from the overall intake of immigrants to Britain

during that period.

I have consulted my colleagues in the Home Office and am happy

to tell you that the Home Secretary's decision to admit these

refugees in no way reduces our commitment to immigrants who

are accepted for settlement here. The numbers of refugees

admitted are not, therefore, subtracted from the country's

overall intake of immigrants.
