Surmary of proposals concerning maternity protection and benefits submitted to Govern- ment in 1978 or appearing in newspapers
Termination of employment
(a) In no case can an employer terminate the contract of
employment of a pregnant employee. (Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee).
Length of maternity leave
(b) The period of 10 weeks should remain unchanged.

Pay entitlement during maternity leave
(c) A female employee should be paid during her maternity leave. (a) Fay entitlement should be:
(i) at 2/3 of wages for 5 weeks (Young Workers
Centre in Sau Hau Ping).
(ii) at 2/3 of wages for the whole period if the female
employee has worked for the same employer for 6 months, full wages if the employment period is one year or more, and pro rata if the employment period is between 3 and 6 months. (Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee).
(iii) at full pay for 2 weeks. (Mr Francis Chaine, a
candidate for Urban Council Elections).
(iv) an allowance of 11⁄2 days' pay for every month of
continuous service (this will mean, for example, that a female employee will be entitled to 72 days paid maternity leave after 4 years continuous service). (Hr Alex W.T. Chan).
(v) the amount at (ii) above but limited to the first

(vi) an amount lesser than (ii) above for the third

(vii) based on the average wages of the female employee
