Protected period should be extended to begin as from the date when the

employer has been

notified by medical certificate of the

pregnancy and to continue until one month at least after the end of the maternity leave period.

Seniority rights should be preserved as well as the right to reinstate- ment in her former work or in equivalent work paid at the same rate.

(a) No night work and

overtime work.

(b) Prohibition of work

prejudicial to the health of the woman or of her child during pregnancy and up to three months after confinement (e.g. heavy weight- lifting, pulling or pushing; undue physical strain including prolonged standing; work with vibrating machines). (c) Right of transfer to another kind of work not harmful to her health, without loss of wages.

(d) Other benefits in

kind or in cash (e.g. layettes, milk, nursing allowance for nursing mothers).

Legislative provisions

in Hong Kong

Prohibited

The continuity of employment of a female employee shall not be treated as broken by her maternity leave.

(a) No woman is

permitted to work in industrial undertakings between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. (or between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.j if she is employed on shift work).

(b) Industrial work of not more than 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week.

(c) Overtime work of

not more than 2 hours a day and 200 hours a year.

(a) No woman employed

in any industrial undertaking is permitted to carry any load which is ressonably heavy having regard to her age and physical develop- ment.

recomiends cxtension of benefits laid down in Convention Do. 3 to women wage-earners employed in agricultural undertakings.
