Dear Mr. Thompson,

The General Secretary of the Hong Kong Christian Council, the Reverend Kwok Nai Wung, has informed us of his Council's request that legislation be enacted in Hong Kong for paid maternity leave.

We understand that legislation before the Government includes the following proposals:-

That maternity leave for women workers should be paid leave.

That the period of maternity leave of 10 weeks remains unchanged.

That a worker who has worked continuously for the same employer for 6 months should receive 2/3 of her daily wage, full wage if the employment period is one year or more, and pro rata if it is between three to six months.

That wage is the average wage of the worker during the last three months of her employment.

That the protection outlined a cove applies to the first two births. A lesser amount applies in the case of further births.

That in no case can an employer terminate the contract with any pregnant worker.

That a pregnant worker should be paid 2/3 of her wage for days off for medical checkup.

a. That the husband of the woman worker who is in her confinement

should be given one week off and 2/3 of his regular wage during the period.
