BETTER DEAL FOR WORKERS

Workers in Hong Kong earning up to IKZ3,500 (2350) a month will be protected by the Employment Ordinance, which guarantees paid holidays and other benefits, if a new Bill just published is approved by the Legislative Council. The proposed law seeks to raise the wage ceiling for non- manual workers covered by the Ordinance from HKX2,000 to HK73,500. Benefits under the Ordinance include 10 statutory holidays a year, seven days' paid annual leave, severance pay, sickness allowance, rest days and provisions for termination of contracts. It also protects female workers from dismissal during maternity leave.

A Labour Department spokesman attributed the increase of the wage ceiling to rising wages. A recent review showed that the increase in wages between July 1973 and June 1978 was about 54 per cent.
